In this experiment, we investigated a physical property called the boiling point. The objective of our experiment is to measure the boiling point of an unknown liquid by using only a small amount of that liquid, and then we compare the boiling point to the boiling points of the three liquids: methanol, ethanol or isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol), so that we can find out the identity of the unknown liquid.
[...] Unknown Determination Code number of unknown: #886 Observed boiling point 64.0 degree Celsius Corrected boiling point 65.4 degree Celsius 64.8 degree Celsius Corrected boiling point 66.3 degree Celsius D. Sample Calculations: Boiling pt 1 Error = - 0.0242 (observed boiling point + 0.0976 = - 0.0242 ( 64.0 ) + 0.0976 = - 1.45 degree Celsius Therefore, the corrected temperature for boiling point 1 is 64.0 + 1.45 = 65.4 degree Celsius % error for boiling point ( 65.4 - 64.7 ) X 100 = Boiling pt 2 Error = - 0.0242 (observed boiling point + 0.0976 = - 0.0242 ( 64.8 ) + 0.0976 = - 1.47 degree Celsius Therefore, the corrected temperature for boiling point 2 is 64.8 + 1.47 = 66.3 degree Celsius % error for boiling point ( 66.3 - 64.7 ) X 100 = E.
