The aim is to produce 6 different esters using ethanoic acid salicylic acid to compare the odors that are produced to their expected odors.
An ester formation is a chemical reaction that takes place between carboxylic acid (ethanoic acid and salicylic acid) and alcohols when they are heated over the Bunsen burner. This reaction is called esterification, which results in the formation of an ester product. A catalyst must be present in order to speed up the reaction and the one used were sulfuric acid.
[...] The sulfuric acid was used as a catalyst, and this sped the reaction up. This reaction is an esterification reaction, meaning that water is formed as a by-product, which makes this reaction a condensation reaction. These esters can be used as food flavorings to enhance the flavor and smell of food. In the end we can openly say that this experiment was successful. [...]
[...] Waft your hand gently over the beaker with the contents of the test tube and smell. A distinct odor should appear Record your findings in a table Repeat all your steps until the alcohols and carboxylic acids have all been used.
