The goal of occupational therapy is to improve the lives of people restricted by either mental or physical disabilities. Occupational therapists assess the patient's condition and situation, and work towards developing activities of daily living (ADL). They begin with critical activities, such as bathing, eating, grooming and dressing. As the patient progresses, "larger" activities are addressed, such as skills necessary for education, employment, or raising a family. Through their work, occupational therapists are able to allow their patients to live independently and productively.
