Reflective practice is an approach to learning through experience. It promotes the continual development of a nurse and helps nurses gain knowledge to challenge their prior concepts and ideas. Reflection involves seeing what happened through a new perspective that helps in personal growth and in developing ways to do it differently, given such a situation. According to Schon, reflection aims at achieving a change in practice instead of repeating the same mistakes (Farrell, 2012). There are several models of reflection. All these models aim at accomplishing the same three things which are to promote reflection on a situation, self-evaluation and analysis and a plan to make amends in the future (Gibbs, 1988). For this essay, I will use the Driscoll, 2007 model of reflection. This reflective model is based on three stages what? So what? And now what? In the first stage "what?", the learner identifies and describes the situation she experienced and reflected on selected aspects of the situation. The second stage "so what?" involves analyzing and evaluating feelings and discuss the effects of actions on the last stage of the model of the "now what?" stage (Driscoll, 2007). In this stage, the learner applies, synthesizes and considers the implications and actions. Evaluation is an important part of the reflection process as it promotes the education process. I chose this model of reflection because it will help me link theory and practice. The Nursing and Midwifery Council outlines the practice of reflection is important in exploring the areas of development in providing quality healthcare through experience (Black et al., 2010). The Driscoll model of reflection will help me build knowledge and understanding, and to reflect on the positives and negatives of the situation and allow for self-criticism (Plack et al., 2008).
[...] I believe that working together with other people for the sake of the patient is one of the most effective ways to provide quality healthcare. The psychologist was very helpful as he helped Lucy open up on the issues that were bothering her. Working with a patient with learning disabilities in a general hospital setting is a challenge, and therefore practitioners should ensure that they offer the patients with learning disabilities at the same range and level of care and treatment as they offer other patients (McPherson et al., 2001). [...] Among the groups that get discriminated against the most are the elderly and patients with disabilities (WHO, 2015). From experience, I learned the need for doing research and having knowledge in different fields of nursing. I have already started gathering knowledge in other fields of the nursing profession. This information would help me not only in a similar situation but also, I could use the information outside the facility in case there is a medical emergency involving a patient other than an adult patient. [...]
[...] This experience also taught me that different patients have different needs and as a nurse, I should identify each patient's specific needs and work towards fulfilling them. Conclusion Reflection is an important way of learning because it promotes the continual development of a nurse and helps nurses gain knowledge to challenge their prior concepts and ideas. It involves seeing what happened through a new perspective that helps in personal growth and in developing ways to do it differently, given such a situation. In the essay, I used the Driscoll model of reflection. It was very effective in my learning experience. [...]
[...] I have to come up with ways to communicate with her so that I could give her the necessary care. I learned that the tone of my voice, body language and the words I was using all mattered when it came to her (Quine & Rutter, 1994). It took me some time, but I was able to accomplish effective communication between the both of us. Also, I got to put the NHS values into practice. One of the NHS values is "Working together for patients" (Sykes, 2014). [...]
