The first ad that appeared on the web was posted in 1994 by AT&T on the website HotWire.com. Created by the interactive agency Modem media, the size of this banner - 468x60 pixels - became the standard size of the classic banner. The contract, signed in April, 1994, concerned a period of twelve weeks, for a $33 000 budget. This ad was created in the form of a promotional banner. As a matter of fact, since the first fruits on the web; advertising was quickly discovered as a reason to be greatly favored. Advertising is an easy source of financing for websites. All search engines can be considered as sons of "Archie" which was created in 1990 by Adam Emtage, who was a student in the University of Quebec, to search documents on the web. Most of the search engines popular today were originally created by students. Around the same time as advertising, one of the first search engines, YAHOO, was created by American students from Stanford University, (1994) and immediately became the first tool used by internet users. Subsequently, Lycos and Excite were born in 1995 (from students of Pennsylvania and Stanford). In 1995 and 1996, ALTAVISTA (created by a French man for Digital Laboratories) and VOILA (France Telecom) arrived on the internet. Finally, two students from Stanford again- Sergei Brin and Larry Page revolutionized this business.
