The United States has developed new methods to combat terrorism attacks after the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center. As a result the Department of Homeland Security was established to help protect Americans against terrorism. Department of Homeland Security (n.d), "The Department of Homeland Security's counterterrorism responsibilities focus on three goals are prevent terrorist attacks; prevent the unauthorized acquisition, importation, movement, or use of chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear materials and capabilities within the United States; and reduce the vulnerability of critical infrastructure and key resources, essential leadership, and major events to terrorist attacks and other hazards (Prevent Terrorism and Enhance Security). A situation the United States has encountered is school shootings and the Department of Homeland Security must add this problem to their counterterrorism goals. School shootings are a form of terrorism in the United Sates. The department needs to change its strategies to prevent these attacks against schools.
One example of a school shooting within the United States is the Connecticut's Sandy Hook Elementary School of 2012. The Huffington Post (2012), "This shooting took the lives of six adults killed at the school were women. Of the 20 children, eight were boys and 12 were girls. All the children were 6 or 7 years old" (the victims). The shooter was apprehended in this shooting but there are measures that can be taken to prevent shootings in schools. It is hard to imagine how someone could gun down adults but shooting young children is heartless. This type of criminal behavior must be stopped.
