Ever since the invention of video games worrisome parents have questioned the effects of the violence in these video games on their children. There has been a lot of attention on this issue, with it peaking in the late 90s and early 2000s. This was primarily because of the invention of more powerful gaming systems that came hand-in-hand with a new rating system. I consider the height of the focus on violent video games to be when Rockstar Games released Grand Theft Auto III for the Sony Playstation 2.
[...] The first was an experiment by Hanneke Polman, in which children ages 10-13 of both genders were put into groups and played either violent video games, watched the violent video games, or played a non-violent video game. Polman tested these groups for aggressive behavior on the playground after playing or watching these games. The boys had a strong positive correlation between playing violent video games and displaying aggressive behavior on the playground, whereas there was no correlation between the girls and the game condition.
