After reviewing the chapter on social stratification as well as the data sheet, I've come to the conclusion that poverty in the U.S. is vastly overlooked. For example, I had no idea that the percentage of people living below the official poverty line was 12.7% which translates to over 38 million! I posit that, if shown this staggering statistic, most, if not all, people would find this to be much, much higher than they ever would have guessed. This is a perfect example of how unaware people are of one of the most detrimental social stratifications in our society- poverty.
