For a long time, minorities have been expected to get totally assimilated to the dominant culture. Persistent differences and accusation of oppression or cultural imperialism lead the Western countries to seek new ways of cohabitation. Nonetheless, clashes occur between liberal values and minority cultures, especially concerning gender equality. In France, in the 80', controversy on headscarves divided politicians between secular education and multiculturalism, while polygamy was unexpectedly, tacitly tolerated. This refutes any real political concern for gender equality and women's domestic condition.
