U.S. citizens live in a world today, which is obsessed with terrorism. This is because of recent activities that have taken place on our own soil, and the events that have been taking place over the world. The attention on terrorism is at an all-time high and with daily coverage on the terroristic activities it would appear that we as a society are attempting to adjust to terrorism. In this paper an examination will occur concerning a prior situation in relation to terrorism and suggest an administrative change that may make the effort to combat terrorism more effective.
In recent months the news of aggressive pat downs from airlines have become a target of much debate. Adult men and women are putting his and her hands down the pants of airline passengers and even children if he or she refuses to walk through a radioactive full body scanner. This is indeed an invasion of privacy and against our Civil Liberties. "Benjamin Franklin once said, "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." (Kelley, 2009) It feels as if we are doing just that, with this new system, which was meant to provide the airplane passengers with safety.
[...] The best way to prevent this from taking place is to remain vigilant and protect to the fullest of their ability with an increased in security both in the airports and aboard plans. The best and most efficient means to combat sophisticated and dangerous terrorism is not to give in or give up freedom but to become more vigilant, more advanced, and more sophisticated. It has developed into normal behavior and this is the frightening part. If we can stop this promptly before it has been ingrained so deep in our culture we can still preserve our sense of liberty and understand how important it is. This will be met with trepidation at first but once we can show the public that we are still vigilantly doing all we can to protect them and prevent terrorism, they will come around. [...]
[...] We are indeed giving up our liberties for a temporary safety. A suggestion would be to hire more security guards and intelligence officers to surround the airports and to be aboard our planes. We could eliminate some of the unnecessary procedures that we have presently with scanners and invasion of privacy. This would allow for more jobs, it would create new services and with the new services it would create a new form of revenue to pay for what it would cost through tax dollars. [...]
