There are four main types of political systems, monarchy, democracy, authoritarianism, and totalitarianism. Each one of these governments has good aspects as well as drawbacks, making some more appropriate than others depending upon the economic climate and the goals of the governing body. The first of these, monarchy, is a "political system in which a single family rules from generation to generation." This is one of the oldest political systems, dating back to ancient agrarian societies. Monarchy was the not only the oldest, but also the most common political system throughout most of history. Throughout the Middle Ages, many monarchs claimed they were chosen by God to rule.
[...] One of my favorite subjects in this class was that of social deviance. The day we ranked the social deviances was the best day of group discussion we had. It sparked the most intense debates, which inevitably push not only the conversation but our understanding to a higher level. I recall thinking about that sheet for that entire week, even as I walked around campus. It was truly incredible, seeing how seemingly normal things today, such as a gay or lesbian couple, were considered to be such a deviant behavior in the 1970s. [...]
[...] This tightening of freedom along with the health care proposal has led a few people to accuse the current administration of abandoning our capitalist economy in favor of a socialist democracy. These people cite the fact that providing nation-wide health care regardless of cost would further restrict our freedom of choice in where we receive said medical care. However, we still have every aspect of a capitalist democracy, both the good and bad, such as the distribution of wealth. In a capitalist society, there is usually a large distance between those with wealth and the impoverished. [...]
[...] The map of Christianity didn't surprise me at all because of the explosion of Christianity through missionaries, colonies, and the crusades throughout the Middle Ages. I found it quite interesting that Russia and the northeastern tip of South America have a high Islamic following. Incidentally, the same area of South America also has a high percentage of Hindu believers. Another fact I was surprised to learn was that Buddhism was only started 2500 years ago. At first glance, this sounded quite young, but after I thought about it more, I realized Christianity was only started 2000 years ago. [...]
[...] He is basing our so-called “literacy” of civics, history, etc. on what his generation and what previous generations were taught was vital information to know. This opens up a huge bias against his case for illiteracy in my generation. What Bauerlein should have done in order to more accurately represent my generation's illiteracy is to create a baseline of true illiteracy to measure against. This would have eliminated the bias with which he judged our illiteracy levels. The second and I feel by far, Bauerlein's most significant point, is his evaluation of the use, and more importantly, the misuse of technology in nearly every aspect of today's education system.
