Acid rain, coastal pollution, deforestation, toxic waste, and industrial contamination infect Europe's landscapes, waterways, and skies at higher levels than ever before. The United Nations, the European Union, and other international organizations have been implementing new environmental policies to help reduce the levels of contamination and pollution throughout the continent of Europe. Several steps have been taken to overcome the problem of environmental damage and there have been marked successes in the conflict, however the situation is still troublesome throughout the region. Global market trends, industrial growth, and political tensions have created barriers which have made it difficult to enforce environmental policies. Although the expanding European Union has unified much of the region politically, there is still fragmentation in certain areas that has created more environmental conflict.
[...] There are many more environmental policies that have proven to be effective, and Western Europe has shown some significant improvement in the areas of greenhouse gas reduction, however Eastern Europe is still struggling to show progress in all respects to the protection of the environment. Bulgaria is a prime example of a country that is willing to sign on to environmental laws in accordance with the EU and UN, but cannot enforce them. There are over 100 environmental laws on the books in Bulgaria yet there is still damage caused from toxic air pollution, half the forests are suffering from acid rain, and two-thirds of the rivers are polluted.
