A City in Republic offers a new study on the emergence of machine politics in New York City during the antebellum years. It adds a new perspective on the origins of a political system, which were common in the larger cities throughout the United States from the mid-nineteenth until the twentieth century. Previous explanations connect the development of political machines to the needs of immigrants and the power of this political system to its ability to provide resources to immigrants, which were not provided quickly enough by legislation. Thus, the power of a political machine's leader was typically based on his ability to meet the needs of the workers and the immigrants.
