If many people, like the American political commentator Monica Crowley do consider that « Healthcare is the cornerstone of the socialist state. It is the crown jewel of the welfare state », the Welfare State embodying indeed a full part of the British history forging also its culture, the Brits may have another opinion about it. All along its critical background, from the explosive birth in 1945 to the political protests in the 90s concerning its reasons to be, it seems that the social way in Britain has been as long as complicated.
[...] That situation considerably damaged the public image of the Health Service and largely of the Welfare State. In the meantime, many British people had to invest into private pension schemes which have proved to be more efficient in every aspect. In this new period, austerity predictions were at sight. Some independent Trusts started managing the hospital cares5. If with this compromise, the whole organization finally slightly improved, the access to elective care is still regarded as a complicated process symbolizing the failure of a certain vision of the Welfare. Although, the necessary political reforms have been quite unefficient to fully help restaure this English institution and if the Welfare State has definitively passed, it is still referred to as a great creation : a perfect idea with imperfect means. [...] Basing the analysis on the period 1945-1990, what judgment can be made of the Welfare State in Britain? If many people, like the American political commentator Monica Crowley do consider that « Healthcare is the cornerstone of the socialist state.
