With the Hong Kong port slipping out of the world's top five, terminal operators should work together where possible, and focus on competing with ports in the Greater Bay Area and beyond'. The greater Bay Area is an economic project gathering 11 important Chinese cities such as Hong Kong, Macau or Guangzhou. Therefore, one can wonder, how Hong Kong's port can stay competitive and ahead of rivals in the greater Bay Area? To answer that question we shall first understand and describe the geographical advantages of the Hong Kong's port. Then, we shall shed light on the challenges the port currently faces.

The Challenges the Port Currently Faces As we have seen it, Hong Kong owns a special location in Asia road trade, nonetheless it is currently facing issues. [...] Nonetheless, the Hong Kong's port is currently facing trouble because of the rise of others major economic cities. Besides, the port has issues in terms of space and facilities that need to be improved, to reach the normal standards. To respond to this problem, the city of Hong Kong should do as the city of Guangzhou, aggressively support its port with financial helps. Plus, new “barge berths” need to be set up, as well as a better “focus on removing operational inefficiencies”. [...]

Considering the rise of ships and cargo sizes, if these facilities were in normal sizes, it would ease the task of the people in charge of handling the container ships via barge. Additionally, the border of the so-called independent city touches the city of Shenzhen, and also very important city in the Chinese economy. This way the Hong Kong's port is highly connected in terms of land access to Shenzhen. Most of the merchandise arriving in and by the port is thus conducted by truck from the port to the main land and vice versa. [...]
