Multilateral negotiation occurs usually between three or more parties which debate on several subjects in the aim to reach an agreement which would be acceptable by everybody. As said Saadia Touval in his article titillated "Multilateral Negotiation", multilateral negotiation is most of the time seen as being a complex and cumbersome process.
So, what are the three mains challenges that we could face in a multilateral negotiation?
We will pay attention to three major time in a negotiation process; the first one which consist by implement a framework to the negotiation, the second one, succeeding to make people change their mind and the third one reach together an agreement.
[...] In this case, everyone had to keep in mind the objective of the debate and which result he is waiting for. Even if no chair were appointed, one of us took naturally the role in order to be more efficient by organize the conversation and make sure that we are on time. During that time, we had to stay focus, be patient because of the repetition of the same ideas which led to confusion some time. [...] Close the debate by finding an agreement, which usually is a sign that the negotiation was efficient. To reach a common proposal, it is necessary to try to take into account the interest of the majority of negotiators. In the case where we had to find a rate about the batteries we had to collect, because Austria, France, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, and Poland shared approximately the same rate, we have succeeded on a side to lower the rate that Belgium and Germany wanted to impose on us because of their capacity to collect and recycle their batteries. [...] We proposed in addition that country which had better conditions for achieving the final rate will help the ones which had more difficulties. From this situation we can retain that, listen to the voice of the majority by adding some suggestions in order to make sure that everybody finds its count, which is a very nice method to reach an agreement at the end of a negotiation. If multilateral negotiation stays a tedious task, which requires patience, forecast, openness, and devotion, it is nevertheless essential to the well-being of the societies. [...]
