Chinese migrants were often overlooked because they were never one of the largest immigrant groups in the United Kingdom. But their presence has been and is still significant. There are many reasons for Chinese people to consider migrating to the UK. In the study of migration, push factors encourage a population to leave its home, while pull factors attract a population to another location. I will use this concept throughout this analysis. Furthermore, integrating immigrants, allowing them to participate in the host society, is an active, not a passive, process that involves two parties. We will see that even though Chinese migrants are highly skilled migrants, they do not automatically integrate into British society.

[...] The questions guiding my research were: What are the many facets of Chinese immigration and integration in the United Kingdom? The Chinese migrants currently have a highly skilled profile. But to what extent is it true ? Has it always been the case ? And also, to what extent do UK and Chinese policies impact Chinese migration flows to the United Kingdom? In order to answer these questions, II will first present an overview of the migration flows in the UK with respect to Chinese migrants. I will then analyse the student population and the illegal migrants. [...]

[...] We must bear in mind that what makes Chinese immigration so special in the UK is that Chinese migrants are mainly students, they are highly skilled and the majority do not stay in the UK. But there are differences in education, language and occupation, notably between mainland Chinese, who speak Mandarin, and their Hong Kong counterparts in the UK, who mainly speak Cantonese. This reinforced their lack of cohesion within organised associations, and the main effect of this separation is the segregation of migrants from the host society. Bibliography Andrade. (2020).
