Michel Foucault, knowledge, geopolitics, Asia, power
The connection between power and knowledge stems from Michel Foucault's well-known thesis that power inspires and shapes knowledge. Overall, this concept coming from a group of French geopolitics pundits claims that power is not necessarily tangible power, according to them, power is in the knowledge: if you know something, it is more powerful than the material side. This concept was theorized and studied by western authors about western countries but now, the main question that comes with it is whether it is applicable or not in Asia.

[...] The field of Intelligence Studies offers several telling examples of the way information, and more broadly knowledge can be used in a coercive way. Cyberattacks and cyber-espionage practices are effective ways to undermine resistance, influence foreign policies, and support the aggressor's strategic goals. In its 2019 Annual report, The Road Ahead: Cyber Security in 2020, the American cyber security leader Trellix (formerly Fire Eye) identified several Chinese cyber espionage practices aimed at its Belt and Road Initiative partners. Hackers targeted the transportation, energy, defense, space, media, and telecommunications sectors for information that could affect its ongoing projects and pressure governments into accepting deals. [...] Confucianism will continue to serve as a leading source of ideas in China for its effort to pursue modernization. Thus, it clearly appears that the concept of power/knowledge nexus differs between the notion theorized by Michel Foucault that applies in the west and what actually applies in Asia with confucianism in China for example. However Asia is not fully parting ways with the original concept as we can witness it with the investments made on hard power in recent years. [...]
