The selected book for review is Youth marginality in Britain: Contemporary studies of austerity by Shane Blackman and Ruth Rogers. This book was published in 2017 and is based on case studies on factors affecting young people in the United Kingdom. The book has 17 chapters written by different authors; in total there are a total of 22 contributors. An increase in the number of youths engaging in crimes and other behaviors that depict deviation from the moral codes of society is a current issue that should be addressed in public policies. It is this issue that the contributors of the book attempt to address. The contribution of the book to understanding the plight that young people in the UK and beyond cannot be overemphasized. The objective of this paper is to review the book focusing on its contributions, strengths, drawbacks and recommendations for further improvements in light of other related literature.
[...] The case studies such as the stories of young people at the local charity where Linda is a volunteer provide firm evidence to the central thesis of the book. Besides the approaches given such as conservative and neo-liberalism are contemporary such that the readers are familiar with their philosophy. The use of contemporary issues and real-life examples enhance both the logic and pathos of the book, thus making the readers see sense in the argument for the young people. In addition, the book is a collection of contributions from multiple authors from a diverse professional background which makes coverage of the topic to be holistic. [...]

The approaches taken by contemporary political leaders portray failures of the state to address the root cause of youths' problems depicted through social exclusion, and an ever-increasing child/youth poverty as evidenced by statistics offered in chapter three. In addition to the challenges faced by youths in general, the young immigrants' challenges are further compounded by their status. They have restricted access to services and only get temporary protection and varied support. The media is arguably not just a reflection of the society by an agent through which new trends and cultures are formed in the society. It is evident that the media, in an endeavor to seek more viewers, has misrepresented the youths and in doing so encouraged antisocial norms. [...]
