I selected this book because I know a lot of people who have read it before. I was expecting this book to be about animals, well more like bees. It turns out to be more about the story of a young white girl living in a time without black rights. This book is fiction; it takes place in a time where there were not yet rights for black people living in the United States especially in the South of the Country. Majority of the story takes place in South Carolina in a town called Tiburon. The narrative is set in 1964 while the blacks were fighting for their rights to be citizens and most importantly, to vote.
[...] Lying was a huge obstacle for Lily because she was not truthful with the sisters at first, it took her a long time to bring her past up to the surface instead of keeping that secret with Rosaleen. Another issue that is talked about in this book is racism, the entire reason for Lily and Rosaleen to flee from their town was because Rosaleen was arrested for even just looking at white people. I feel as though these two issues are very important for others to read about although they are also covered in other books and novels, so this is not necessarily the best book to read if learning is an objective.
