Mihail Lermontov and Nikolai Gogol were two of the premier Russian novelists of the nineteenth century. Both helped to expose and shape how the outer world understands the vast and historically intriguing Russian continent. Lermontov's creation of the character Pechorin is widely read as a perfect description of man in his purely contradictorily complex state. The main character of A Hero of Our Time, Pechorin, is in constant competition with himself, as he spends his life self-promoting, and using others for his own gain. Gogol's Dead Souls has been described as poetry in the form of a novel.

The speaker of each quote shows how he acknowledges what the reader must be thinking, and then criticizes the reader for being so hypercritical. These passages compliment each other. The speaker is attempting to defend his actions. Moreover, this quote speaks directly to the reader. Dead Souls is strongly dependant on the readers knowledge of the period in which the story is set. This quote directly speaks to the reader as it evokes his or her own guilt. [...]
