The dictionary definition of an epic is "An extended narrative poem in elevated or dignified language, celebrating the feats of a legendary or traditional hero." In the epic, The Odyssey, the narrator takes the reader on a journey with the epic hero, (or traditional/ legendary hero) Odysseus. Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, has left home to fight in a war leaving his kingdom, and pregnant wife to fend for themselves. He spends most of the story trying to find his way back home, but it isn't easy. In The Odyssey, by Homer, the gods influence plot development and set Odysseus and his men off track when Cyclops held them captive, when Athena aided Odysseus, and Circe put a spell on some of his men.
