The concept of family t presently, as the world has grown smaller, children no longer have and loyalty to family has been a virtue in nearly all times and cultures of this world. Albeithe need to embrace their parents as they once did. Yet in Ibesn's play Ghosts, the parent-child relationship is one of the story's main struggles. It is this very struggle that leads to one of the play's overall themes- one of lying and deceit even to one's family. And the battle of love and hate is apparent in both the relationships of Engstrand and Regina and with Oswald and his mother Mrs. Alving. In all Acts we can see clear cut examples and underlying motivations of why all of these characters struggle to love one another.

[...] Again, that's the ease of writing a dream story. No one has to be "in character" because you have given yourself a world not governed by any laws whatsoever. I don't know a lot about Islam, but I am confident that, unlike Christianity with our stickers of "Jesus Rocks" or "JesusFreak," Muslims, whether Sunni or Shiite, don't display affection for Allah like that. [...] Ibsen explores the concept of family deeply in Ghosts. We see the good and the bad, the healing and the suffering. But at the heart of this play is relationships. And as Oswald's life leaks from him at play's end, Ibsen is almost urging us to seize life and truth ourselves. If not, we may meet a similar end. "Independence" had a good title. It's a little vague, but I thought it suited the story well. However besides that I have major problems with the story. [...]
