Women have always been labeled the weaker sex. Evolutionists will say that men have adapted to be physically stronger, as it is their role to provide for his family and protect them. Religious scholars will tell you that wives must defer to their husbands, and were created as mere compliments for their male counterparts. Historians teach that women were once treated as property. It took thousands of years, but in some societies women have finally been granted the same legal rights as men, although many social injustices still exists.
Women, and sometimes men, who fought, and continue to fight for male and female equality, and in some radical cases, female dominance or the abolishment of males, are known as feminists. Three prominent feminists, Simone de Beauvoir, Helene Cixcious, and Luce Irigaray, all have very different feminist ideals, which this paper will discuss.
Simone De Beauvoir was not inspired to write on the topic of women, finding it overdone and irritating. She has heard a lot of writers discuss the ‘problem,' while doing nothing to fix it, or even properly identify it. So out of necessity, Beauvoir sets out to identify if there even is a gender inequality problem, and if so, exactly what it is, in “The Other Sex.”
