Story - Dead Man's Path - Ndume Central School
In the short story "Dead Man's Path", the protagonist gets a chance on a silver platter to work towards the fulfillment of his dreams. However, not every character in the story sides with his plan to transform the "world" starting with position as headmaster in Ndume Central School. The existing contradiction between Obi Michael and the antagonistic priest triggers a challenge between them as the priest tries to reveal to Obi a new awareness of life.
At the outset, Obi gets an opportunity to act as a head teacher at Ndume Central School that there before lagged back in every aspect. Following to this, Obi had the obligation to transform the school so that it improved its performance and better yet maintained this progress. Furthermore, the protagonist Obi wanted to turn the environment all around the school into a better one by planting flowers and making it an attractive school. With this as his target, Obi and his wife put their lives on to developing the school hence realizing their goal. Being an energetic man and now tasked by the mission authorities with these tasks, he initiates his mission in confidence hoping to realize all the ideas he had in mind for the school.
[...] One evening right before Obi went home he glimpsed at an elderly woman walking right across the compound from the village. To his astonishment, going up there he found faint signs of an almost disused path from the village across the school compound to the bush on the other side.” After enquiring from one of the teachers, Obi realized that the villagers used this path all along as it allied the village shrine and the burial place for the villagers. [...] Right before the disappointing inspection, planted heavy sticks closely across the path at two places where it entered and left the school premises. These were further strengthened with barbed wire” aimed at keeping the villagers out of the now renovated compound aimed at pleasing the superintendent. To his knowledge, the school once attempted to close the path, but as a result, it faced massive opposition from the villagers. Subsequently, the village sent their priest with the intention of explaining to him the value of the path and its significance to the villagers' beliefs. [...]
