This poem basically is about a life and death. It is an old man who reflects and does introspection of his life when he was young. It seems that he regrets of what he had done in his youth. He wonders whether he had lived his life properly or not. Moreover, it seems that he was not satisfied with life that he has got in his youth. This kind of thought usually crosses in somebody's mind when they are old or when it comes a death approaching. When somebody is young, they do not think further usually. They just do what they want to do. Yet, people are getting old, they usually do introspection of what they got so far, what they have done in the past. Some may feel satisfied with his life, some may do not.
The regret can be seen from the repetition of the first line. This kind of repetition gives an impression of strong emotion, especially feeling of regret. Here, the speaker keeps asking with his life that he had in the past. From the second line, we know that the speakers wonder whether he had ever been thankful with his life. Morning is the beginning of day, or even life. Every morning, when a new life begins, we should say thanks to the God for His blessing. Yet, it seems that the speaker is hesitate if he ever done it or not. Besides, it seems that the speaker has experienced many things. Have trod in many ways suggests that he has taken many ways or has had many experience in his life.
