I chose to read the Picture of Dorian Gray because I was already semi familiar with the story and numerous friends recommended it to me. This famous novel takes place in nineteenth century England and revolves around the high society of that time and place. There is a supernatural aspect to this story as well, which makes it especially attention grabbing. Dorian Gray is an attractive young man, and poses for several portraits by a well known artist, Basil Hallward. Early on in the story Dorian meets a man named Lord Henry Wotten who tells him all about the value of beauty and youth.

[...] Despite the pleasurable and beautiful things that he surrounds himself with, the dissolving of his soul in the portrait does not distract him. Once he murders his friend Basil, the guilt is too much to bear and Dorian realizes that he must to away with his torturous portrait. Evaluation: I now know why so many people recommended this novel to me. It is a captivating story filled with the entire spectrum of human emotion. Dorian's greatest weakness is his ability to be influenced by Lord Henry and following his philosophies rather than living by his own moral code. [...]
