John Stuart Mill's treatises on the nature of civil liberty and the political philosophy of utilitarianism are some of the most groundbreaking, and perpetually relevant, discourses on the subjects. His works stand as a testament to the ability for progressive, and at a given point in time 'radical', thinking to alter the world and enter, over time, the general population as an agreed upon sentiment. Much of his work, then maintained and discussed mostly in the elite circles of academia and its relative branches, now enters daily discussion. The same issues that he felt would soon enough plague his Victorian England are debated the world over and recommendations that tend to follow his guidelines are bitterly opposed and supported.
