Language, language history, languages matter, travelling, job, personal opportunity
As Michel Serres said, « Our bodies listen, shout and remember. » Without the exchange of energy and information, no organism - bacteria, algae, fungi, plants or animals - would survive. Before becoming human, communication characterizes living organisms as open systems: cells communicate with each other within bodies, just as bodies communicate with each other. Chemical reactions still exchange energy and information within inert matter.
And yet, in addition to these purely physiological or physical performances, we humans have added a panoply of artefacts designed to relay our body's communication activities. This arsenal of messengers and semaphores varied over the course of history, and gave rise to languages. Language expresses our ability to symbolize what we think or feel, and this is what makes it indispensable for human beings.
