[...] Pride and prejudice - Joe Wright (2005) - To what extent do the male characters' actions serve to characterise their personalities? Mr Bennet Mr Bennet remains calm in all circumstances. Even when the women nearby gets over-excited, he keeps his composure. When he leaves the room before Mr Collins's proposal to Elizabeth, one fears that he will fail to "protect" his daugther from an unwanted marriage. He then appears rather weak. Nevertheless, he eventually takes a stand and supports his daughter by saying that he "will never talk to her again if she marries Mr Collins". [...]
[...] His first appearance during the ball is highly relevant: everybody is dancing, siling and laughing. Darcy, on the contrary, stays on the side. He is a critical observer. When he is introduced to the Bennets, he does not smile. He even declines Elizabeth's invitation to dance: his pride is then a real humiliation for her. A few minutes later, he openly despises her beauty. However, his actions eventually show that he is a good person. He believes in loyalty and in true love. [...]
[...] He likes to says that he is a charming man, but his attemps to be seductive are turned to ridicule by the whole family. A good example is to be found when he dances with Elizabeth and tries to get closer to her. But his encounter with Mr Darcy is even more relevant : standing behind Mr Darcy, looking so small compared to him, having to cough to draw his attention, and left with a silent assembly when Darcy finally turns to face him.
