Max Weber was a German sociologist, philosopher and economist. He was born in 1864 in Erfurt and died in 1920. His research focuses on the process of rationalization of modern societies in the Western world. In this context, he became interested in the development of capitalism (The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, 1905), and the processes of domination and the bureaucratization of the city.

[...] It is obvious that the changes that cities experienced since 1921 upset Weber's vision of the city, especially since the city emerged as the place where modern rationalization was the most visible (use of space, allocation of places by function etc.). This led to a homogenization of cities across the world. It would probably be easier to build a model of the contemporary city than that of a modern city in the Weberian sense. Finally, it would have been interesting to examine the status of the city compared to other areas. [...]
