This work focuses on the tourism development in Turkey. It is a country that is "friendly, handsome, with a rich culture and not at all expensive". It is a country that is modern enough to be comfortable but still traditional, and therefore interesting to analyze.
As part of this analysis, the author first consulted the websites of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey and one of the Tourist Offices in the hope of finding statistical and economic data. These web sites had data regarding the promotion of tourism in Turkey.
Located at the junction of two continents, Asia and Europe, and in a place where three continents, Asia, Africa and Europe are closest, Turkey is an attractive tourist attraction due to its history, art and culture, cuisine, climate, wildlife, terrain, etc
Dating back over 25,000 years, this land has played host to many communities, cultures (Hittite, Greek, Roman, Ottoman etc) and religions and still bears their imprint. Turkey being 98% Muslim country is one of the top 10 destinations in the world hosting more than 23 million tourists a year, including 15 million in Istanbul.
With an area of 814,578 km2, of which 790 200 km is in Asia and 24 378 km in Europe, Turkey has two European and six Asian countries such as neighboring Bulgaria, Greece, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia, has coastlines on the edge of 4 seas, the Black Sea, Marmara Sea, Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean Sea with a total length of 8000 km.
Turkey earns close to 14 billion dollars in tourism revenues alone. There are 1 million hotel beds of which 350 000 are in Istanbul, 500000 spread across the various resorts. Three dozen are mainly located around the Mediterranean and Antalya, the leading destination.
Turkey has had 30 000 seats, 20,000 cars, 6,800 buses and 4,500 mini buses with 27 seats for tourist transport on land. A strong federation of travel agents has 4500 tour operators. Istanbul airport, with its capacity of 18 million passengers per year receives 32 aircrafts per hour.
In Turkey the development of tourism aimed at the reduction of gross inequalities between different regions of the country, creates new jobs and provides more opportunity for holidays to the Turkish population. This beginning has generated a new dynamism and improvements in physical and social infrastructure including locals and tourists have benefited from both.
Besides the creation of new infrastructure, new jobs and additional revenue, tourism activity in these regions has also created new players (local organizations, voluntary associations, guides, local government, municipal unions etc) disposed and able to cooperate with the central government.
The Ministry of Tourism is the largest organization linked to tourism in this period and has engaged in planning, licensing and standardization of tourism facilities, monitoring of existing facilities, pricing of rooms for hotels and restaurant menus, opening training centers for skilled personnel.
Additional responsibilities was the promotion of Turkish tourism as a product by opening offices in the country and abroad and encouraging the establishment of professional organizations, such as unions for travel agents, hoteliers and travel guides.
