Abstract

During the 1964 season, the race was on for the National and American League Pennants. The New York Yankees and the Cardinals became the champions of their leagues, but the road was bumpy along the way. Still, in the end, the better team won.
The Yankee management had been taken over by Yogi Berra, a former teammate to many of the veteran players. The senior players, like Mantle, Maris, and Ford were slowly deteriorating. Mantle was constantly injured. Maris was having a hard time grasping a ball and Ford's arm was giving out on him (Halberstam 237-240).

[...] For the first time, the Yankees showed concern of losing the series (Halberstam 339-342). Game six, the Yankees won 8-3 and remainded in St. Louis for the seventh and final game with the series tied 3-3 (Halberstam 344). The pitching match-up for the seventh game was Gibson against Stottlemyer once again. This was the pivotal game. It proved that spirit could triumph over fatigue. Even though Gibson was exhausted, he pushed forward with personal drive to win the series (Halberstam 344). [...]

[...] Most of the players were injured, but that didn't stop them. As a team, they were having so much fun; the bumps in the road became unnoticed. Through perseverance and dedication, the Cardinals won the pennant on the last day of the season (Halberstam 299 315). The Yankees had made it to the series once again. Their contenders, the Cardinals, were very relaxed which was surprising due to the competition they were up against. They didn't fear them. They are a young, talented team. [...]

[...] Players like Simmons, Flood, and Gibson bestowed their wisdom of the game upon the eager rookies (Halberstam 252-253). lessons were about how to deal with adversity of playing in the big leagues and how to deal with so long a season, which might easily war down even the most talented younger (Halberstam 255). It wasn't until mid-august that the Cardinals started getting their act together and becoming contenders for the pennant. They had played 115 games. The team was in fifth place, nine and a half games behind the Phillies. [...]
