I believe that the simplest and most accurate way to determine a person's ability to become emotionally attached to pets is to gather and analyze 1) reactions to hypothetical situations involving animals and 2) current and past relationships with other humans. Logically, emotional reactions to animal anecdotes should suggest how that person feels about the "importance" of non-humans and how much emotion they feel towards animals.
