A traumatic event, series of events, or set of circumstances can cause someone to develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a mental health condition. Its diagnostic criteria are described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5). These criteria include symptoms such as intrusive thoughts, avoiding triggers that remind the patient of the trauma, adverse alterations in arousal and responsiveness, as well as mood and cognitive disturbances.
