Nursing - Informatics - Advancements
Advancements in information technology and quality problems in healthcare have become more pronounced; public policy has had a focus on methods of dissemination of the principles of informatics to a larger audience for a broader benefit. Focus has primarily been on adoption of electronic health records; critical, however is the availability of adequately educated workforce that ensures the implementation of information technology in a multifaceted socio-technical field leads to a maximum benefit.
My professional goal is working as a nursing informaticist; nursing informatics is a field of nursing that integrates nursing science, computer science and information science to manage and communicate information and knowledge in nursing practice. Nursing informatics assists nurses, patients and other practitioners in decision making in their roles. The assistance is achieved through the incorporation of information technology and processes. Certification for nursing informatics is offered by the American Nurses credentialing centre.
While currently holding certification as an operating room nurse, I am well placed to achieve my goal as an informaticist since among the requirements for getting certification for the area is that the individual must be a practicing licensed nurse with experience of two years fulltime work in any nursing field. That being said, I believe my work in the operating room and general qualification as a nurse is a step towards the achievement of my goal as an informaticist.
