Children - Cartoons - Influence - Research
Cartoons are preparatory designs, paintings or drawings intended for humor, satire or caricature. Cartoon maybe in form of continuous videos mostly appearing on television sets but can also be drawn in magazines to portray a certain message. Cartoons are non-realistic or semi-realistic drawings or paintings that maybe illustrated in visual art. This art has been present from the middle ages, which by then had a definition of a preparatory drawing for some art such as tapestry, stained glass or even fresco (Bendazzi, 1984). The humor nature emerges in the 19th century where they were mostly present in magazines and newspapers. They evolved to comic strips and animated films in the 20th century. Cartoon is a term used to refer to both the animated and gag one. Animation is simply a style that images are in rapid succession to show motion or movement. The greatest viewers of cartoons are children and especially because of the rapid improvement in the media world with cable television rampant everywhere. Children, and especially in modern times find themselves glued to the television watching cartoons all day. Cartoon viewing has replaced outdoor games that were initially important in the growth of children. The big question is whether these cartoons really add value to the lives of our children. Do the children gain positively or negatively from the viewing of the cartoons? The answer is simple because cartoons have both positive and negative effects on our children (Bendazzi, 1984). However, the positive effects of these cartoons are more adverse compared to the few negative implications of cartoons. The positive effects outweigh the negative effects and for this reason, one may advocate for kids to continue watching cartoons in order to continue gaining these benefits. The text below discusses the positive and the negative values and tries to make a decision on whether cartoons are applicable in the current times.
The first and most important effect of watching cartoon in children is its modifying effect on the behavior of children. Research shows that cartoons help form good character as well as modify the wrong character in children especially in modern times. The fundamental stages in children comprise their character formation and this stage is the most critical in their lives. This is because, all the child learns at this stage remains with them for the rest of their lives.

[...] With the emergence of cartoon network parents may easily monitor their children since they are just in their compounds. The risk of getting injuries drastically reduces once a child is in the house compared to while in the outside environment. Cartoons glue most kids to the television and for this reason all the kids in modern times are always in the house reducing the negative influences from bad company (Hossler, 2004). Being in the house also creates ample time for kids to socialize with their parents unlike in earlier times where socializing was a bit not entirely possible. [...]
[...] The negative energy in the cartoons makes the kids behave violently towards their peers. The aggressiveness of children especially experienced in their adult life is mostly due to the foundation laid during their childhood. Children tend to copy or observe each behavior shown to them by any source (Witt, 2000). The increased media exposure in children and the improvement in technology increase their chances of watching diverse cartoon programs and mostly without supervision. Other cartoon networks have abusive language that is also part of the stunted growth in children. [...]
