Life can become vastly more complex which requires added attention these days. Going back to the time when there were no cars, cell phones, or any other device that would sidetrack someone as effortlessly as today, attention was easier focused and less divided. Now a day, things altered and everybody is multitasking more frequently. Take for example driving a car, a person does more than just drive.
Attention is required in order to drive but many people do numerous other things such as eating, talking on the phone, or listening to music just to bring up few of the various possibilities that move attention from one task to another. In order to do many things concurrently one would denote that attention is flexible but this also signifies that attention is restricted given that there is a flood of data coming from the environment. One is not capable of committing their total attention to it. Most often, one will selectively provide their attention to what seems to be most significant or they will change between responsibilities.
Therefore, while paying attention is chief, one must center on the more important data while disregarding lesser one. So not only are there a variety of kinds of attentions needy on the incoming data, it seems that attention is subjective by other factors such as one's goals, experience, and interests (Martinez, 2010, p. 55). In conclusion, it could be defined that the concept of attention as part of the cognitive process to which others belong, such as sensation and perception, with attention being the one helping to concentrate and overlook on the received data.

[...] If the other cars suddenly begin to get more dense then I tell the children that daddy cannot talk to right know because I need all of my attention focused on the driving. Even though my children occasionally still talk to me, I cannot hear and understand what they say to me. This supports the fact of attention both being divided or selective. I can select my attention to focus on driving because of the raise in traffic or I can divide my attention between talking and driving. [...]
