Different Philosophies, Ideas, Different Texts
Different writers use different methods to communicate their points. An external analysis of articles shows many differences in approach as well as ideologies. Though writers often have divergent reasons for writing, a deeper exploration reveals unexpected similarities. A deep analysis reveals similarities in the philosophies used in writing. Therefore, this paper will show that writers often use different means and different philosophies to communicate similar ideas.
‘The Last Americans: Environmental Collapse and the End of Civilization' is an article that connects environmental degradation and a looming threat to the human society. The article makes a compelling case for environmental factors being similar to essential resources whose over-exploitation resulted in the fall of some of the biggest and most impressive civilizations. Therefore, Diamond argues that diminishing resources is bound to result in the fall of civilization in the modern day (Diamond 684-687). McKibben uses different philosophies, ones based on economic models, to draw the same conclusion. Therefore, both authors use different philosophical approaches to derive similar conclusions.
[...] On the other hand, McKibben attempts to appeal to the guilt conscience of the readers. He makes a clear connection between the effects of irresponsible consumption of agents of pollution such as usage of heavy machinery and the effects of these traits on the less fortunate people in other countries (McKibben 666-670). For example, usage of one heavy vehicle in America defeats the efforts of many people to conserve the environment by planting trees in the developing nations. Diamond uses imagery to a small effect. [...] Therefore, both authors use different philosophical approaches to derive similar conclusions. Environmental Issue from Hell' is an article on the role of politics and lack of moral obligation in eliciting low responses to environmental issues in the developed nations. McKibben clearly shows the relevance of moral obligation in directing correctional efforts on the environment (McKibben 666-670). He shows that slow responses to urgent issues and lack of urgency are resulting in a silently escalating environmental problem. From the generalizations in his essay, Diamond assumes that the reader has some knowledge on the rate of environmental depletion but disconnected from the information because of a perceived lack of urgency or direct involvement. [...]
[...] The implication is that the current society is in the risk of extinction if it continues exploiting resources at the current rate. On the other hand, McKibben uses a friendly tone to foster a feeling of solidarity with the readers while at the same time blaming external factors for the continued degradation of the environment. He unites the audience behind a common enemy, politicians, to create a familiar platform and make the readers feel they are not part of the problems. [...]

[...] The tone clearly captures the need for immediate action from the readers as the best solution to the existing problem. Used together with an address of ‘we' the writer leaves no doubt as to who the intended audience is (Diamond 684-687). The tone is engaging the audience and therefore resulting in direct challenges that are directed at the writer. In a way, the tone indicates the usage of an appeal to the emotions of the reader because they imply personal responsibility for all readers. [...]
