Every month the Albany Police Department focuses on certain aspects of the field. A.P.D.'s Human Resources Department invites you to sign up for the free in-services. Every Monday, at the Center Station location, HR hosts free in-services that benefit the employee both in the field and with their personal life. Below is a calendar and class descriptions for the 2009-2010 year.
September 2009 - "Domestic violence and firearms"
More and more often you hear of domestic violence tragedies. In this class the officer will be able to recognize the signs of domestic violence and prevent another tragic death from occurring.
October 2009 - "The thin blue line"
Bribes, racial slurs, and unnecessary force- stop police corruption before it starts. Police corruption is on the rise. We welcome guest speaker Bobby Shields as he takes the class through everyday occurrences and the officers who become most susceptible to police corruption. Shields' will show the trend of police corruption in all of its forms, from accepting a free coffee to officers using illegal substances while undercover.

[...] Lateral Moves, Special Operations, Advancement Opportunities A. Lateral Moves Officers may place a request for a lateral move any at given time during their employment. Requests must first be approved by officer's direct supervisor. The approved request is then forwarded to the Human Resources department for final authorization. Process usually takes about 2 weeks before decision is finalized. B. Special Operations Officers require 3 full years of service with the Albany Police Department before applying for a position in Special Operations. [...]

Annual Updates Upon annual anniversary of officer's employment, every officer must complete the 10 hour annual update. This training course is offered every 1st Friday of the month. This training course is a state and Federal mandate and no officer will be exempt from attending the annual update. Officers will learn of new techniques to help deter crime being used cross country. June 2010 - “Home invasions” This class will discuss investigations involving home invasions and what neighborhoods are most vulnerable. Officers will learn about investigative success and a pro-active approach to prevention. July 2010 - “Cynicism and law enforcement” Lack of convictions, long tours, and stress can cause an officer to become cynical, angry or even act out of character. In this class you will learn ways to be proactive! [...]
[...] January 2010 - “Response and rescue” First responders encouraged to attend. As first responders, you enter the scene well before the ambulance arrives. What do you do when you find someone unresponsive to arousal? A child under the age of 10 is seizing, what do you do next? Officers will learn advanced first aid. February 2010 - “School violence” What prompts a child to act out in a violent rage? This workshop will discuss school violence including gang related violence and the warning signs to look for.
