Claude Levi-Strauss, Social Science structuralism
Structuralism is a linguistic method applied to the humanities generally allowed to make huge advances. The very term originates from the structuralism "Course in General Linguistics". In this lecture, Saussure proposed a revolutionary approach to being concerned over not its genesis, as these colleagues, but the scope and specific meaning of the language in an a historical perspective. It thus reversed the relationship between system and history. In its principles of language, he distinguishes the language the set of conventions adopted for the exercise of language in individuals and the word that is the same exercise. Applying this analysis to anthropology, Lévi-Strauss has caused the same revolution analysis keeping in passing the anti-historicist mind.
Structuralism aims to update from a number of social data, structures that organize and combinations that operates. It should not be seen either in the form of a structuralist theory. Indeed, formalism and structuralism separate because of the different attitudes they adopt towards the concrete. Conversely formalism, structuralism refuses to oppose the concrete to the abstract and to favor without real foundation positions. The structure as defined Straussian "has no distinct content": It is the same content in a logical organization apprehended as real property.
[...] This thought is a special case in the French philosophical pe n Sée who always took the subject as a starting all despite the sociological changes such as those of Durkheim. Lévi-Strauss said in the wild pansy " That begins to settle in the alleged ev i dences of me will never recover. "So the idea of interiority that is disputed by the ethnologist. Structuralism moved to where the organization is the system, without the knowledge of consciences. Levi-Strauss admits the bottom of the social systems they have fo r mal infrastructure, unconscious thought, anticipating the human mind as if our science was already made in things and as if the human order of culture second was a natural order. [...] Next Lévi- Strauss human intelligence is. Mythical thought is not a pre-logical thought whose output would be logical thinking men. It is for him a thought i log in as sensitive a classifier thought that uses e m empiri- categories (the " raw and cooked "For example), true conceptual tools for d é pledge abstract concepts and string them together proposals. The most important is not the content of the myth, they are not usually completely nonsensical ? The worst mistake by following Strauss would interpret each symbol separately, as did Jung example. [...] For example, in the myths and tales of the Indians of the Americas the same ac tions are assigned, according to the stories in different animals. Understanding the meaning of a term is the switch in all its contexts. The anthropologist does the same. If the eagle appears day and night owl in the same function, it will draw the eagle is a diurnal owl as a night owl eagle, which means that the relevant opposition is the date and night. [...]
[...] Like language yet, kinship is " sy s tem communication It does not develop spontaneously from a factual situation, but as an arbitrary system of representations : This is not a biological method, but an alliance, a social exchange. Strauss marriage rules ensure the circulation of women in the social group and thus replace a consanguineous relations system of biological origin by a sociological system of alliances. Kinship is a major stru c tures of social life, since it ensures between individuals and groups a r tain this type of communication. Language is exchange, communication, dialogue.
