Most of us learned how the different parts of our government worked when we were in school. I cannot speak for everyone, but I know in my class not all of us knew how this would affect our adult life. Some of us only paid enough attention to understand how it worked in order to pass the class or know what we were doing when we went to vote. Only those who knew the career they wanted would have direct effects from the legislative and judicial branches, or those who were trying to keep high GPA's, paid close attention. I did not know then how it would all affect me and have learned much since high school and even more since I started college.
In human services the government plays a big role. The laws are important to everyone, but in human services we have to follow these laws as we serve our clients. We also need funding for programs which comes from the government and have certain procedures we have to follow in obtaining this funding and how it is spent. When there is a need to change or add laws to help in the human service area the government is once again a part of this. This is handled by the legislative part of the government.
When there are problems within the human service field this is when the judicial branch becomes important. The courts protect the rights of the people in civil law, determine guilt and innocence in criminal law, and settle disagreements between citizens and government agencies in administrative law (Chambers, 2005). No matter which court the problem ends up in the court is there to uphold the law and protect the citizens of this nation.

[...] Social workers should become involved in the legislative process. The judicial branch has a large amount of power and can delegate what clients social programs must serve. It can eradicate a program under certain conditions. The judicial branch also has say as to who is entitled to benefits of a program or take away those benefits (Chambers, 2005). Most often there are previous court cases which have set presidencies involving problems or issues within the policies of social programs. These are decisions made by the court which can help in deciding outcomes in similar cases. [...]
