Racial discrimination has been among the biggest problems to the American society. After the civil rights movement, the law provided a platform for racial equality in the country. However, almost fifty years later, the society is characterized by big differences between the racial groups. The differences lead to stereotyping against the African Americans and foster negative images. However, these are not the fault of the African Americans, their mode of talking about themselves and their forms of expression often foster development of the stereotypes and create negative images about the African Americans, both internally and externally.
Elements of how people talk about themselves are imminent in their popular culture (Conyers 243). For example, popular music has to contain elements of cultural identity to attract a large audience. Therefore, the modes of artistic representation of their society are a reflection of the cultural values and attitudes of a particular society. In this sense, the content of hip-hop is a direct representation of how African Americans talk about themselves.
[...] The problem is that racial discrimination and other forms of social injustice are part of the African American heritage. Therefore, they feature prominently in their popular works of arts. When these are transmitted to the youth, the lead to continuity of the existing values(Conyers 186). Thus, the problem lies in the element of transmission of negative aspects of culture continuity of attitudes that inhibit racial integration. [...] Therefore, hip-hop promotes the incidence of violence among the African American communities. A solution to the problem of how hip-hop artists talk about their society is adoption of impartial outlooks to the sensitive issues. For example, exclusion of the racial profiling would be a good place to start. However, it is not easy to change the outlook of hip-hop music because the people appreciate the content as it is(James and Karen 135). In addition, the element of honesty and the cultural presence of the music would reduce the relevance of implementing changes. [...]
