The popularity of social networking sites is a relatively new phenomenon Within the past 10 years several evolution have been made. Most are positive, but some are negative. With this phenomenon there has also been several sites that have reached iconic status. Some have reached this status for positive contributions, and some have reached this status for negative contributions. Various social networking sites may be critiqued based on their privacy issues and other ethical mishaps.
Path is a social network that is primarily used as a cell phone application. It has a website as well, but most users utilize the cell phone application. The application is used on Apple phones as well as Android phones. (Golijan)This application was created in the year 2010, and the site has grown to include over 5 million members. (Golijan) Path lets the users interact by sharing photos, text, songs, and specific locations.

The next reason that this event is unethical is because the basically stole the information of the users. The site stored personal information even if the user didn't confirm when prompted. The final reason this is unethical is because of the Software Engineering Code of Ethics and Professional Practice. There are several points in this code that the developers did not abide by. [...]

However, users that misuse the site are ruining the reputation of the site. Twitter has specifically helped the transfer of information become faster. When certain events happen in the country it spreads through Twitter faster than news stations can broadcast the information. Because of users, such as the ones mentioned in the previous paragraph, the validity of that information has been compromised. [...]
[...] Facebook has experienced ethical issues regarding privacy that could possibly cause the developers to reshape thier company. Twitter has faced issues regarding users that may cause them to require more from users. Nevertheless each company has ethical issues that could easily be handled. With the help of the Federal Trade Commission and other entities of authority it is possible for each to carry on in an ethical manner.
