Ethnic minorities are groups in an institution, state or country that have national and cultural traditions that differ from those of the major population. Ethnic minorities face physiological, emotional and social challenges while undergoing their studies or at the workplace all over the world. Discrimination, insults and assaults to ethnic minorities by members of the ethnic majority are common, and most of the times they go unaddressed. Racial micro-aggression's are among the most common types of racial discrimination and segregation of ethnic minorities. They are frequent words, looks or gestures that propel belittling messages to ethnic minorities. Racial transgressions to ethnic minorities may be in the form of micro insults, micro-assaults or micro-invalidations.
Micro-insults are statements, whether verbal or nonverbal, which portray rudeness and insensitivity to a person from a different race. Majority of students from ethnic minority groups get treated as if they are less intelligent by fellow students and staff in their schools. When a student from an ethnic minority scores an A or explains a complex concept in the classroom, they mostly get bewildered or shocked glances by the other students. The surprised glances or statements imply that it is shocking that a minority student got the answer or spoke eloquently. Previous findings have also shown that ethnic minorities' intelligence scores reduce once they get filled with stereotypes about their inferior intelligence. It creates less favorable institutional climates for the graduate students.

Research findings outline that most students are more likely to feel relaxed in a study environment that respects and incorporates all people of different races, cultures and religions in all activities. An environment that is not dedicated to preaching multicultural diversity and sensitivity creates a hate zone where students can abuse and assault each other.
