China in the mid-20th century was a country full of change. The country was transitioning from the rule of the nationalist KMT party to the communist CCP party. This change did not come easily and millions of lives were affected by it. Spider Eaters by Rae Yang is a memoir written about growing up at this time. Rae is especially qualified for this task due to the fact that she experienced the revolution from more than one perspective. Over the course of her life, Rae transforms from a little girl growing up in a life of privilege, to a young woman working in the countryside, and finally becoming a woman disillusioned by the communist regime.

This life lesson is what eventually lands Rae in America to study at the University of Massachusetts. The most interesting part of the story is Rae's evolution of thought.
