Chronicle of the Narváez Expedition, Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, 1542, story of a soldier, sixteenth century, disastrous expedition
History is recorded in a variety of manners. Some of the most revealing perspectives come from the individuals that have actually experienced the past events take place. The documents each individual provide are recognized as primary sources. Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca provides an example of a primary source with his work, Chronicle of the Narvaez Expedition. Upon analysis of the document, it may be contextualized as well as summarized.

The pilgrim was accompanied by three other men. All of which survived a voyage gone wrong. Within the story, the crew navigate an ambiguous location. They are under the orders of a new governing body in Florida. Their disastrous expedition stretches from Florida to California. It was presented as a report to the Lord of Spain in 1537. Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca sought to become legislative leader. He thought the document would help him in his quest. Following his original report, the document was distributed to the public in a constrained circulation around 1555. It was not published in English until 1851. [...]
[...] Closer to publication it served as a report to advance Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca's rank. Today it correlates to the reader's understanding of the sixteenth century figures and events. Additional research of different resources may reveal more of the rendering's essence and relationship to the sixteenth century.
