Sarmiento's Facundo presents a biased historical account of Argentine history and the struggle between "barbarism and civilization" taking place during the 17th century in Argentina. Sarmiento's political aims of spreading European culture, which he deems to be civilized, and of uniting Argentina under one constitution, stand in the way of relaying an accurate and unbiased account of the Argentine Civil War. He uses generalizations and stereotyping to depict the Provinces and its caudillos, and to portray the superiority of the cities, in particular Buenos Aires. Furthermore, he places particular importance on the role nature plays in shaping each character's lifestyle and position in Argentine society.

This natural setting is an incubator for barbarism, and its inhabitants live violent, solitary lives and form a habit constantly showing a superiority to Nature” which transcends into their dealings with one another (Sarmiento 25).
