"Moundbuilders" is a term used to refer to a group of Natives tribes, living on the East side of the United States before the arrival of Colons. These pre-Colombians civilizations were well known for their funeral rituals. Hopewell's Culture Hopewell's culture is a culture that is associated, as well as Adena, with the "Moundbuilders" community. They succeeded the Adena in the historical timeline and flourished alongside the northern and Mideastern rivers between "300 BC to 400 AD, in the Middle Woodland period" (cf.2). The different populations in the Hopewell culture were connected by a large communication network which included trades routes too known as the "Hopewell Exchange System" (cf.2). [...]
[...] On the other side, the Fort Ancien Culture, which took place in the Ohio valley (where were the Adena followed by the Hopewell culture) showed some similarities with the Hopewell culture but were not considered as their direct descendant. The Fort Ancient Culture is not considered as "moundbuilders". This tradition died with the Hopewell Culture in this area and their funeral rituals were differents ("flats graves"), however, they were known for their "small flat-topped mounds and animal-shaped effigy mounds" (cf.4). Occasionally, previous mounds from the Adena and Hopewell cultures were reused as ritual places. Omeka. "Early Woodland Period - the Adena Culture."
