Water has been an essential “Spring of Life “throughout the ages and without the presence of water, it is very difficult to imagine the existence of the world. Ancient Indians Rsis (saints) have classified water as “Apsu” or “Apah” as one the “Pancha Maha Bhuta” out of five “Basic Elements” from which, the entire world is found. So it is right to call water as one of the important precious natural resource on the earth. Water has played an important role in the evolution of life on earth and also it has played an important role in the evolution of man. Water occupies 2/3 of the body volume and 4/5 of the weight of the human body. ¾ of the earth is covered by water, so water is rightly called as “Supporter of life “.
Today, water is very much essential for day-to-day life and also it is needed in large quantity for agriculture and industry. The role of water is very important in generation of electric power as well. Water purification is one of the oldest concepts. Earlier water was purified by using sand and also with cotton cloth pieces. As the years passed the consciousness about health and hygiene developed among the people in the community and along with that technology also improved and various methods of water purification was developed.
